About us
Ghan Bros Seafood is a family business at the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets. We buy at the Sydney Fish Market, we bring it back cold, and we sell it over a counter where you can see what you're getting and ask what to do with it.
That's the whole business, and it's the reason the website exists: so the same fish, cut the same way, can reach the parts of Canberra that can't get to Fyshwick on a Saturday morning.
What we actually do
We buy whole fish and break it down ourselves. Fillets are cut when you order them, not the day before — which is why the site asks you what size piece you want rather than selling you a pre-wrapped tray. Prawns are peeled here. Oysters are shucked here, to order, because an oyster shucked yesterday is a different thing.
Prices move because the market moves. Some weeks snapper is the buy of the week and some weeks it isn't, and we'd rather tell you that than pretend everything costs the same all year.
Fresh, and what we mean by it
Cold chain is unglamorous and it is most of the job. Fish comes back from the market on ice, goes into the cabinet cold, gets packed cold, and travels in a refrigerated van. Nothing on this site sits in a warehouse.
If something isn't right when it reaches you, ring us or email us the same day and we'll sort it out. We'd rather hear about it than have you quietly not come back.
Eating well is most of why people buy fish
A lot of our customers are here for the same reason: it is hard to find a protein this lean that is also this quick to cook. Most fish on our counter runs above 20 g of protein per 100 g. The oily ones — salmon, ocean trout, hilsa, mussels — carry real omega-3. And a fillet is eight minutes in a pan.
So every product page carries its nutrition figures, and we write up recipes with the numbers on them: recipes and nutrition. High-protein, low-calorie, keto, family dinners, and seafood for the Ramadan table.
Restaurants, cafes and gyms
We've supplied Canberra kitchens for years, on our own refrigerated truck, at a trade price that moves with the market instead of being frozen in a quarterly price list. If that's you, apply for a trade account — we answer applications within two business days.
